Why is the New Zealand Dollar getting stronger

GBP has struggled for the third week in a row against the New Zealand Dollar as Mervyn King’s comments about keeping Sterling weak to aid GDP hinder the market. The Pound has struggled against many currencies but dropped by almost 5% since the start of August 2009.

Mild Sterling Recovery Against New Zealand Dollar

Sterling has strengthened slightly this morning against the New Zealand Dollar following a week of negative news for the Pound.

There was no data on the economy in New Zealand today but investors had a look at minutes from a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meeting in August. The minutes showed that the Bank is unlikely to move interest rates any time soon giving the NZD some further strength against the Pound.

New Zealand Dollar Strengthens

The recent currency movements for the Pound New Zealand Dollar has seen the NZD hit 2.43 its lowest level since February 2008 making sending money overseas more expensive. With Mervyn King’s comments that he wants to see a stronger Pound we may see the exchange rate go lower.

We have witnessed a minor recovery today for Sterling against the NZD with an increase of 1.3% since the previous day. Carry trading is the likely culprit as Sterling has dropped by almost as much against the Japanese Yen.
